Restful sleep is vital to recharge our bodies and maintain our health. The image to the right is real data from our Overnight Sleep Screening device. It measures Percentage of Oxygen (SpO2) and Pulse Rate (PR in Heart Beats per Minute). At the moment in time that the Blue Line appears in this 1 hour view, oxygen levels are steady above 95% and the heart rate is at a restful 57 beats per minute. |
In contrast to the waveform data above, this 1 hour view is from a person with Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA). OSA occurs when the soft palate and tongue relax , collapsing the airflow for at least 10 seconds. Here oxygen levels become erratic, dropping way below 90%. The pulse rate races above 80 beats per minute. |
This image is a 10 minute view of the graph above. At the moment of time where the Blue Line appears, the oxygen level is dangerously low at 79%. When oxygen levels drop, the body responds by increasing the heart rate. At the same moment the heart is pounding at 82 bpm, far from the restful rates required for healthy sleep.
At the next breath, oxygen levels rise and heart rates slow down. This continual rise and fall of oxygen and pulse is typically only seen in sleep apnea. The side-effect is daytime sleepiness and exhaustion. It's easy to see how sleep apnea can lead to heart disease and stroke.
